What I Will Tell My Son When He Stops Believing in Santa Claus

Dear T.,

Santa Claus was once a real person who lived a very long time ago. He became legendary for giving gifts to good people. Many people found him inspiring, and they called him St. Nicholas. We call him Santa Claus.

After St. Nicholas died, people continued his good work by giving gifts themselves. They discovered that giving gifts gave them a warm, happy feeling inside.

Today we call this feeling of giving, “The Spirit of Santa.” As people continued Santa’s work, even more people were inspired to do the same thing. The idea grew, and now many, many people continue to spread the Spirit of Santa all over the world, hundreds of years later.

Mommy and Daddy are the Spirit of Santa for you and your sister. And we’re also Spirit of Santa to each other, our extended family, our friends, our teachers, and to people we don’t even know.

The Spirit of Santa isn’t a person, it’s a feeling. And now that you are old enough to understand the difference between the person Santa and the Spirit of Santa, you now are old enough to be the Spirit of Santa too. The power of giving is something that grows as you grow, and it makes Christmas more magical when you see how you can make a difference in someone’s life.

Santa is far greater than one person. Only when we all work together to bring joy and happiness to others does the Spirit of Santa really work it’s true magic.

I’m so proud of you. I love you so much.

Merry Christmas, my darling boy.
